Things to know about hiring a Bookkeeper
- Bookkeeping is not a regulated field. Anyone can take a course and call themselves a bookkeeper. To ensure you are getting good value for your money ensure your bookkeeper has a certification.
- Several years of experience in one company does not qualify them for your company. Look for a bookkeeper with a wide variety of experience in different industries. Wide experience gives the bookkeeper more creativity when it comes to problem-solving.
- Get references. There are many bookkeepers out there who can actually be a threat to your company.
- Do not be afraid to ask for a Criminal Record Check. It’s your money and your company, safeguard it.
- Look for continuing education. Dedicated bookkeepers want to keep up with new technology. Certified bookkeepers must do Continuing Professional Development work to maintain their certification.
- Should be doing books as a full-time/dedicated business. On the side bookkeepers often are not as qualified as they seem and do not give your work priority.
